CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A Charlotte County man is dragged by a pick-up truck for 3 blocks and walks away with just scratches.
According to the sheriff's office, he was dragged after trying to stop some thieves.
What 64-year-old Dwight Brown described to us Monday afternoon is something you'd see in a Hollywood action movie. He and his wife were coming home from the grocery store Saturday afternoon, when all of a sudden they saw someone stealing from their house. Dwight decided to take the law into his own hands.
"I wasn't letting him go nowhere. He was a thief. I knew right away what he was doing. I said, "I don't care what you are. You're a thief and you're stealing my damn stuff,"" Dwight Brown told WINK News.
After confronting the suspect, Dwight said the man dropped the furniture and ran to his truck. Dwight followed him and grabbed onto the side of the truck as the suspect sped off.
Dwight told us refused to let go on the truck because he didn't want the guy to get away.
"He took off with me riding along the side of the board at about 50 mph with him trying to sling me off," Brown said.
Tire tracks in the front yard and along the street show the chaos that ensued. Dwight says he was dragged three blocks before he finally was able to punch the driver and get him to stop. Surprisingly Dwight escaped with minor injuries. He has scrapes to his arms and some bruising, but overall he says he's doing okay. On Monday morning he was already back to work.
His family tells us they're stunned by his courage. "My grandson was awed. he was like papa how did you do that? He's my hero, but I wish he wouldn't take risks like that," said Paulette Brown, Dwight's wife.
56-year-old Scott Anderson, of Charlotte County, was arrested at the scene. He's facing burglary and theft charges.

I'm glad this turned out the way it did, but I don't know it was the best way to deal with the situation. This man could have easily been shot or hurt badly by this robber. I mean, if they're robbing a house, you can't think they're moral enough not to shoot you. At USF a few years back someone was shot to death after he tried to stop some car thieves. I would just urge people don't get the idea that "taking the law into their own hands" is always prudent.

Dwight Brown is a lucky man. I witnessed a similar incident a few years back and that guy was no where near as lucky...he fell off vehicle and got ran over by the fleeing thief. The road rash was absolutely horrific. I am 100% for citizen justice but there are limits. Glad all worked out in this matter.

Only burglary and theft charges? What about trying to kill that man was hanging off his truck?

Good for him! If more people take action against thieves and lawbreakers, maybe they will think twice before doing something. Too often and too easily, lawbreakers get away with their crimes.
