COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - Some indicators suggest Wall Street is hitting Main Street hard as financial concerns move beyond the mortgage and foreclosure crisis.
Like many others, Cesar Gonzalez is feeling the crunch of the economy."I need to pay the mortgage. I need to pay a lot of bills, but the money's not coming out," he said.
He lost his job three weeks ago and unemployment covers less than half his monthly income. "Everything is gone because I no have money to pay. One difficulty is for the electric bill," says Gonzalez.
Gonzalez cut home conveniences like pool and lawn care. He even dropped insurance on two cars he chooses not to drive. But some services can't be cut. "We need to pay our electric the same as the mortgage because we can't live without electrical," he said.
A spokeswoman for Florida Power and Light says they've seen a spike in delinquent payments recently. It's the same story elsewhere.
Collier County Public Utilities has seen the number of late bills double this year. In Lee county that number is even higher with an increase of 115 percent compared to last year.
To make ends meet, Gonzalez has to rely on his 17-year-old son. "He needs to go to work to some part time, to help me to pay the bill," says Gonzalez.
And once his son graduates high school, he'll join the military to continue helping his family through these tough times.
"I need to prepare what happens in three or four months more because we can't support a lot of bills without the money," Gonzalez said.
If you find yourself in the same situation, you can call you utility company and often they will work out a payment plan or grant you an extension on you due date.
Community agencies, like the Salvation Army Corps and St. Matthews House also have utility assistance programs.

The truth is that the big company don't cares about us little people. But they should because we help them be a big company with using there services. What are they going to do when people don't have money to pay there bills? That's what we all are facing you don't know about next month or next week. That's so deppressing I think. The company could take your last dollar if you let them.We are the little people the normal not the rich that don't have to worry like us.Maybe oneday they will understand.

I believe our Country is crumbling, but no one sees it yet, and our Government (We The People), should stop bring illegals over here, and stop sending killing machines overseas. I thought Americica is so great! Think again. Soon we all will be on Government rations. Thank you America for your support to us Americans!

I am having the same problem with FPL. By bill is due the 14th and I cannot pay it until the 17th and they said they are going to shut me off!! No extensions whatsoever. They need to understand that everyone is going through a rough time right now.

LCEC is the worst!!! They have show no consideration for anyone and have the nastiest customer service department I have ever delt with. They should try to work with people who are willing to pay but need a payment arrangement every so often,

I agree with Rhonda. LCEC here in the Cape shuts your power off if you are one day late.
