Moving out and moving on

By Kyle Jordan, WINK News

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Today marked a homecoming for some, and a new beginning for others. Five weeks ago, hundreds of people in Bonita Springs were forced from their home because of flooding. Some were able to return home today for the first time.

The Estero Community Center has been home away from home for Maria Nunez and her family for more than a month. Today they took the first steps towards a return to normalcy.

Nunez says "I'm going to live in Saldivar. I went in and cleaned up a little bit. I'm bringing stuff from Manna Christian to Saldivar; my stuff, because I have some stuff there. So, I'm almost done."

Nunez and her family lived at the Manna Christian Park in Bonita Springs before flooding forced them out. Today, as the Saldivar camp opens next door, she and others got their first look inside. Even though it's been more than a month, Nunez and others will call the shelter home for just a little while longer.

Maybe until Friday night, after school, in the afternoon maybe," says Nunez. She's concerned because 3 of her 4 children ride the bus to school, and she doesn't want to change their routine in the middle of the week.

Now, Nunez and so many others like her are ready for chance to move out and move on.

The Red Cross provided cleaning supplies and bottled water to families moving back to the Saldivar Camp where a boil water notice is still in effect.

The Manna Christian Park next door remains closed.
