Man run over by car in parking lot, driver will face judge

By WINK News

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A Lehigh Acres woman will soon face a judge, after Florida Highway Patrol troopers say she ran over a man in a parking lot - killing him.

"Heard a screech in the parking lot, coming from the parking lot. A screech and a simultaneous shout or scream," said witness, Ivy Lebron.

It's what Lebron says she heard after a driver hit three people in the parking lot in the Lehigh Acres Walmart Tuesday.

According to FHP, 75-year-old Mildred Spinosa was coming out of a handicapped parking space when it happened. Troopers says Spinosa backed into them and continued backing, pinning 66-year-old Sebastian Previti.

"I was in total disbelief and the guy was still under the vehicle. I just could not believe what I was seeing," said Lebron.

Rescue crews had to lift up the car.

"The three bags are ready to lift approximately 56-60 tons. So that's enough to lift any common passenger vehicle on the road today," said firefighter, Charles Crouse.

The air bag system works using air tanks, high pressure hoses and stair-like blocks. The rescue move - a delicate one as crews lift inches at a time.

"There's a lot of internal injuries that take place when you have somebody that gets crushed by a large vehicle," said Crouse.

The whole sight - something Lebron will never forget. "I don't think it's something that anyone would want to see, cause it will stay for a while," she said.

Another victim - Arline Previti - was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but has been discharged. The third person hit had minor injuries.

Spinosa has been charged with improper backing, and could face additional charges depending on the outcome of the homicide investigation.

At the age of 65 and after, people need to be road tested by the state every two years to make sure their reflexes and attentiveness is safe for the rest of us on the road. There have been too many elderly that have almost cost me my life whether it be them driving too slow or not paying attention. My Grandfather was a great driver at 82, but his wife was bad and shouldn't have been on the road. Therefore please don't take offense to this as I don't mean any. There's many good senior drivers.
