CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - Monday was the first day of witness testimony in the murder trial of a Port Charlotte woman. 26-year-old Holli Lyn Baty is accused of killing her boyfriend's 4-year-old daughter in December of 2006.
Baty is accused of 2nd degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse in the death of Cheyenne Eairheart. Deputies say Baty struck Cheyenne several times on the night of her death, possibly because she wet the bed the night before.
Today, jurors heard from numerous witnesses for the state. They included many of Cheyenne's family members including her father, Wesley. He testified that Holli's relationship with Cheyenne had always been strained.
By far the most shocking testimony of the day came from Holli's sister, Kelly about the way she once disciplined Cheyenne after she had an accident. "She smeared feces on the end of her nose," says Kelly Baty. "I guess she thought that would prevent it from happening again."
Kelly Baty also described another instance of Holli's disciplinary practices. "Cheyenne wouldn't sleep so she asked Cheyenne should she tape her eyes shut, so my sister put tape over one of her eyes," says Kelly Baty.
The trial continues tomorrow with expert medical testimony.
