Haiti in need of post-hurricane help

By Jeremiah Jacobsen

FORT MYERS, Fla. - As Hurricane Ike moves out of the Caribbean, some of the storm-battered countries left behind may never be the same.

There's no electricity, little food, and water everywhere. Some towns have been flooded for days. A Fort Myers man, who still lives part-time in his native country, says Hanna-- and now Ike-- have left behind damage like he's never seen before.

"That water got power to remove anything," said Pierre Clervil, who was at his home near the town of Gonaives when then-Hurricane Hanna lingered over Haiti for days.

"I tried to come down on the first floor, but I (couldn't) do it. Because the water was seven to six feet inside the house," Clervil said.

His town has been the hardest-hit in the entire country. Countless people have died, there's no electricity, and Gonaives is almost completely cut off by floodwater, making it difficult for help to get in.

"The people very sick, very hungry, you don't find nothing to eat," Clervil said. You stand up in the water for weeks. You walk in the water every day. You can't find no good water to drink."

Clervil was able to leave and return to Florida last weekend, before Hurricane Ike, but not before wading through waist-deep water for hours just to get out of town.

He says he's fortunate his family members are okay after Ike added to the misery, yet he worries how his fellow Haitians will be able to recover.

"The people need to stand up for the people of Haiti right now," Clervil said.

One local group is doing just that. Naples-based "Hope for Haiti" is collecting donations for "survival buckets" to be sent to Haiti. Each bucket contains food, medicine, blankets, toothbrushes and water purifying tablets. To learn more, visit hopeforhaiti.com.
