LEE COUNTY, Fla. - WINK News told you how the Lee County Animal Shelter helped rescued nearly 80 pets abandoned during the flooding in Bonita Spring. We have an update on what happened to those animals.
The pets didn't have an easy way out of the flooding in Bonita Springs. A one year-old mix named Moses was one of 79 animals left behind in the Manna Christian RV Park. Workers for the Lee County Animal Shelter made attempts on five different days to rescue Moses before they were able to bring him to safety.
Ria Brown with Lee County Animal Services says, "He was barking and growling...and I wouldn't of thought ten days later he'd be sitting here with his head in my lap."
Brown says Moses is doing much better now. He's ready for a new home. Moses is one of the rescued dogs currently up for adoption along with Big Red.
Big Red's story about being abandoned during the flooding touched Regina Johnson so much it brought her to tears. "I just can't imagine leaving him here, he looks so forlorn. To hear people left him."
"He needs somebody to love him," Johnson says.
Johnson plans on adopting Big Red. But there are many others who need homes.
Animal Services needs homes for a cat and six birds abandoned during the flooding. Meanwhile Brown says they have about two dozen other kittens they're preparing for adoption.
The good news is, out of the 79 left behind, some people claimed their animals and about 20 have been adopted so far.
The shelter did have to put down of the rescued animals that weren't healthy. Don't forget there are a lot of other animals at the shelter that need good homes.
