Preparing for Ike: Trim your Trees

By Melissa Cabral, WINK News

Naples - If you have large trees in your yard, they could pose a serious risk if a storm comes to Southwest Florida.

LCEC is encouraging residents to help prevent downed power lines by trimming overgrown trees.

There should be an 8 to 10 foot clearance on either side between tree branches and power lines, and a 10 foot clearance between the top of trees and the main power line.

Keep in mind, the power line from the house to the pole is the homeowner's responsibility

Also, don't trim branches that are touching power lines. You should trim dead or weak branches near your home as they can be dangerous during a storm.

Remember to secure or throw away any debris.

I think if they are so worried about trees then they should cut them. If a hurricane comes the electricity will be out anyways so worry about family and other important stuff to prepare for.

Alex, I have to ask about your comment.."Thanks to the rich!" What exactly does that mean, that you are at more risk for living in a travel trailer and it is the rich people's fault somehow? Just had to ask..

For Alex......Trim your trees? You live in a travel trailer and your worried about a fig tree? You'd better move the travel trailer to Georgia. The fig tree will be all thats left after the storm. Save your life.

I have a problem that the manager of the park I like in can do nothing about. I live in a travel trailer, and I have a large fig tree leaning towards my trailer, but the manager says it will not go. I will be riding out any storms, and do not know what to do. If it goes, my son and I will be dead. Period. Thanks to the rich!
