Flood victims in shelter taking time to learn English

By Althea Paul, WINK News

Estero - Some Tropical Storm Fay victims are using their time at the Estero Community Center to learn. Most of the hundreds of people forced out of their Bonita Springs homes don't speak much English, but now they're trying to change that.
Ricardo Cano pays close attention to an English teacher at the Estero Community Center.
For him, it's the best way to spend time since flood waters from Tropical Storm Fay forced him to the shelter.
"It's very important for me to learn English because we live in this country," said Cano through a translator.
He is the main reason this class started.
Carmen Munoz, the Hispanic Affairs Coordinator with the local Red Cross, spotted him every day - writing down sentences in English, trying to teach himself.
"It was a sense of admiration, because it demonstrated to me how willing he was to learn the language," said Munoz.
"I've learned English by myself and it's so-so. Street English basically, but I'm trying to learn a lot more," said Cano.
And Munoz soon found out - Cano wasn't the only one with that desire.
"It's beautiful. Even though I'm old in age, but it would be beautiful. I would like to learn the language," said flood victim, Anibal Gomez, through a translator.
At least for now, these flood victims have their chance.
"Above all it benefits me and maybe it'll open up a job for me," said Gomez.
"I don't know how much time I'm going to spend here, but this is an opportunity that I can take and study," said Cano.
Red Cross officials are not sure how many more classes will be held, but they at least hope it will spark up interest in learning English.
