Road rage case sends 65-year-old to hospital

By WINK News

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- A 65-year-old North Fort Myers man is recovering in the hospital after he was beaten in an apparent case of road rage.

Lee County Sheriff's detectives say surveillance video captured 38-year-old Jason Stewart of North Fort Myers hitting the elderly man for nearly two minutes, while he was on the ground.

The attack happened Wednesday just before 9:30pm in the parking lot of the Pine Island Road Wal-Mart.

The victim's wife tells us her husband was leaving the restaurant, Arizona Pizza Company on Pine Island Road and was headed to the Wal-Mart parking lot.

On the way, she says her husband was nearly rear-ended by a speeding pick-up truck.

Sheriff's reports say the 65-year-old yelled at the driver to not drive so dangerously and went on his way.

Minutes later, detectives say the driver of that truck, identified as Stewart, followed the man to his parking spot and confronted him.

Two witnesses were loading up their groceries nearby when they say Stewart got out of his truck and yelled at the older man.

They told detectives the older man tried to calm Stewart down before Stewart hit the man in the face, causing him to fall down.

The attack didn't end there, witnesses then say Stewart then got on top of the man and continued to hit him.

Their story was backed up by surveillance video captured by Wal-Mart cameras.

The man's wife says he suffered a broken nose, collapsed sinuses and bruises all over his face.

We are not naming the victim at the request of his family.

Stewart then left the scene according to sheriff's reports, but returned a short time later.

He was arrested on scene and charged with aggravated battery and aggravated abuse on an elderly person.

Anger is the wind the blows out the light from the lamp meaning once one esculate being led by untrust emotions negative behavior will occur the thought pattern is not the same. It sounds like the attacker was already walking around with rage a time bomb waiting to explode and the really sad part is he never stop to think about the consequences of his actions. Medication, therapy, support groups whatever it takes people do what you have to do to better you because prison is not set up for rehab

As a new resident to Florida I am amazed at the number of angry drivers but more amazed at the driving habits. I've seen more drivers in Florida on a cell phone (holding it in their hand)than in PA, NJ, and DE combined. They are talking and smoking..phone in one hand and cigarette in the other. No hands driving? They never pull over to the "slow" lane even though they travel at 25 mph in a 55 zone. Road rage is an immature reaction but so many drivers create situatins and not only old timers

He should be ashame for beating on a 65 year-old man.Where's the respect for people these days?I guess he wasn't raised to respect others. He should be in jail until he learns you can't be beating up people, respect others, not be able to drive to have road-rage.We don't need him on the roads.

The victim is a relative of mine and this ticks me off to no end. This piece of garbage better have the book thrown at him. He better get some prison time and not just have to do an anger management class. He could have easily killed this victim.

People like this Jason Stewart irk me to no end, Road Rage Kills. He'll probably get off with a slap on the hand, and maybe a little probation. Give him his licence back, and the keys to his truck. In a few weeks he'll be out there driving like a crazy man again. I just hope in the very least, he gets into some anger management classes.
