Flood Water Recedes In Bonita, Residents Return

By WINK News

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - It's been nearly two weeks since Fay hit Southwest Florida, and since then WINK News has seen hundreds of people forced from their homes because of flooding.

Now many flood victims are seeing the damage for the first time.

The water has gone down significantly over the weekend, and most roads are open to local traffic. Now, most homes can finally be reached without using a boat.

On Monday, WINK News say a lot of people out in Bonita Springs, checking their homes, removing debris, and cleaning up.

An insurance representative was out as well, taking pictures of the damage.

In one home, the water came in higher than the floor molding, and now, the homeowner is left dealing with mold and bacteria.

He fears what could be in the water, knowing that houses in his neighborhood are on septic tanks, which likely leaked into the water.

"I couldn't help it, you know. Every time I get splashed a little bit, I just walk over to the hose a little bit and hose myself off. But if that water stays on you, it starts, its like nail polish remover. Or somethin like that. It just really starts itching at you, you know?" said Richard Shaw, the homeowner

Another complaint WINK News heard is the smell. Not just outside near the standing water, but inside homes as well. It's beginning to smell musty.
