SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - Rising flood waters are causing major damage to many homes in Southwest Florida. But there's another victim of the flooding: you car's engine.
Throughout the past week we've seen plenty cars driving through flood water. For big trucks and jeeps, it's not really a problem. Though for smaller, compact cars it's trouble.
"I had three cars in one week," said Scotty Janson, owner of Scotty's Automotive in South Fort Myers.Since the flooding began, Janson's had several people come in who have engine damage from driving through the water. "They get wet, you're in some serious damage," he said about wet engines.
Engine damage can cost you up to $6,000 dollars to repair. It can also takes several days to fix.
Janson says the reason why engines flood is, on some cars the air filter hangs so low that even if you drive through just a few inches of water, the water gets sucked back up the through the air filter and floods the engine.
To avoid this, Janson suggests driving through the water very slowly or avoiding it altogether. He says doing this will protect your engine and your wallet.
