NOT SO SWEET: Gas prices and ice cream trucks

By Cristin Severance, WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Gas may have gone down a few cents, but it's still causing major headaches for drivers and some small businesses.

The owner of CZ's Freezies in Cape Coral loves her job, but the returns are little or next to nothing.

CZ's Freezies ice cream truck is Jennifer Czarneki's dream machine. She's wanted to be an "ice cream woman" since she was 12-years-old.

"One reason I really love it is, say for example I wake up and its not like the perfect morning, the first little kid I see jumping up and down, waving with a huge smiling on their face because the ice cream tuck is coming down the street, just wipes away all the negative that could have happened," she says.

Fulfilling this fantasy means she has to fill up the gas tank a lot. One tank costs about $80 plus another $10 bucks for the generator.

"I have my generator on to keep my freezer's at the licensed 40 degrees below," she says.

It may be cold in the freezer, but the inside of Jennifer's truck is a little warm, that's because she doesn't run the AC. It costs too much money.

"With the price of gas that little AC sucks up so much from the generator I just choose not to use it," she says.

To turn any sort of profit this creative Cape Coral lady had to get...well... creative. She has contracts with a few after-school and summer-school programs. "Because I can just pull up there, I guess I am run my generator during that time, but within 40 minutes I sold anywhere between 60 and 100 ice creams," she says.

Cruising city streets since December, she still hasn't made enough money to cover the costs of the the brightly painted truck but she says her spirits won't be dampened.

"When people see the truck, they wave, they smile, and that's my payment. It doesn't have to me money," she says.
