62 caught in immigration sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - A five-day sweep of immigration violators and fugitives in Southwest Florida has netted 62 arrests. That included six gang members. Authorities said the gang members were part of a group called "SUR 13" based on Fort Myers. Federal and state authorities said the operation in Lee and Collier counties targeted immigration violators and those convicted of crimes. They included people who had committed aggravated assault, burglary, weapons offenses, DUI and resisting arrest. Most of those arrested will be deported. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has fugitive teams in Florida. Their goal is to ensure that deportation orders are enforced and that alien fugitives are captured. |

People are uninformed about immigration. Many people want to become legal but cannot because in 1996 Congress instituted a 10 year bar to reentering for persons who overstayed their time and in 2001 congress passed a law probiting persons from adjusting status in the US unlees they were the beneficiary of a relative petition or labor certification filed before April 30, 2001. Persons would go abroad to get their visa if not for the 10 year bar. They need to extend 245(i) of the INA.

I am a white American. My family came from france and Scotrland many about a century ago. Do any of you ignorant people relize that the first recorded person that set foot in this country was a Black man, followed by Spanish explorers. I beleave that the immigrants should get their Visa's and MUST learn our language. But they are not taking jobs that you whining people want. These sweeps should occur daily.The fact there in this country illeagally makes them a fugitive. It's too bad a police officer had to lose his life to bring a public out cry to the problem of illlegal immigration.
