Fallen officer campaign raises: $100,000++

By Cristin Severance, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla - $100,000++ was the amount written on a check to Susanna Widman from law enforcement agencies. Officials don't want to release an exact total to protect the Widman family, but they do want to say thank you to everyone who helped them far exceed their $100,000 dollar goal.

A large red thank you sign sits in the middle of a news conference thanking the community for all of the money and support for fallen Fort Myers Police Officer Andrew Widman's family.

"Thank you, thank you for the tremendous support you've shown Susanna Widman and her family," says Mayor Jim Humphrey's.

"You are truly special. Words cannot describe how proud I am, not only as a fellow citizen but a police officer serving this community," says Cape Coral Detective Robert Wardrop.

The two small words didn't seem big enough to express just how grateful Susanna Widman is.

"I just, I mean thank you, it just seems so silly to just say thank you after all this because the outpouring has been overwhelming. I want to thank the community and I want to thank these guys for going with their instinct and doing this idea," she says.

It's an idea that started with a five dollar bucket and some skepticism.

"We thought the $100,000 dollar goal was a pretty hefty goal," says Major Glenn Johnson.

"I had an idea that I would set out and raise $100,000 dollars in 72 hours, and obviously, this community had bigger plans," says Cape Coral detective Thomas Rall while holding up an orange bucket.

We aren't sure just how big those plans were. The check given to Susanna Widman was written for $100,000 dollars plus plus.

"They are still county the money, this is about Andrew. Basically, the amount of money isn't that important. The support was just phenomenal," he says.

The support doesn't seem to be stopping. Even at the event the donations kept coming. All the money going to a woman and her three children. A family who lost so much, but gained the backing of an entire community.

I really hope Susanna keeps her intelligence and don`t let some loser from taking advantage of her for the money.I`m sure her family will see that don`t happen.As a retired Ct. trooper, I have seen this happen more than once.
