FORT MYERS, Fla. - Fort Myers Police say they'll turn over the investigation into the shooting that left 30-year-old Officer Andrew Widman and his accused gunman dead to the State Attorney's Office on Friday.
The independent review is policy; there will also be an internal investigation.
As the men and women of the department mourned the loss of the young, well-respected police officer, the investigation into the shooting that left him dead, never stopped.
The investigations will determine whether the other four responding police officers who fired their weapons, followed the law.
FMPD's Major Baker says he believes the officers will be cleared,
"Knowing what I know of from being at the scene that night, from my observance, there's not a doubt in my mind these officers acted appropriately, they protected themselves, they protected each other and the community at large."
Major Baker could not release any more details about that morning due to department rules and policy, but he says we should learn more once the internal and State Attorney's investigations are complete.
He says he hoping it will take no longer than 30 to 45 days.
Major Baker says investigators within his department have been piecing together the details of that Friday morning. He says they also have statements from five strong witnesses who saw what happened.
According to police, Officer Widman was responding to a domestic dispute between Arango and his girlfriend in downtown Fort Myers when he was shot at point blank range. Police say Widman never had the opportunity to pull his own weapon.
Major Baker says it's likely Officer Widman's response saved the woman's life, "I definitely think, no doubt, he definitely saved the life of the other half of the argument, but I think when we look back at the big picture there was a number of people that they're lives were saved that evening at the sacrifice of Andy."
