Crowd pays respects to fallen police officer by watching procession

By WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Thousands of people came out to pay their respects today to fallen Fort Myers police officer, Andrew Widman. And a number of them weren't even at McGregor Baptist Church or the cemetery.

A crowd of bystanders line a sidewalk along Colonial, near Fowler. People from different walks of life and different ages, but all here for one reason.

"We just came out here to show a little respect," said Sammy Matias.

And they did just that, watching the funeral procession of Officer Andrew Widman - who was shot and killed Friday.

"These people take an oath to office to protect and serve our community and when something like this happens, it's just very sad. We want this procession to know that we're behind them in every way possible," said Fort Myers resident, Robert Blanchard.

Bystanders, even coming out of stores to honor the fallen officer. Some - fighting back tears.

"It's such a tragedy. I mean, it could happen to anybody," said Melissa Davis.

"He's here to serve our community and protect us and it's just tragic," said Matias.

For one group, it's how they spent their lunch time.

"It gives me goosebumps to think of his little daughter and his wife and his family that suffers now," said Tammy Lovely.

And for many here, it's also a way to say thank you.
