Autistic camper left in hot van at bowling alley

By Mike Essian, WINK News

EAST NAPLES, Fla.- A special needs camper reportedly gets left in a hot van in Collier County for nearly an hour and a half.

It all happened on a bowling alley field trip and a worker there says the camper looked scared more than anything.

"Everybody was very, very emotional. very emotional," Theresa Bronchak, the manager of Woodside Lanes in East Naples said.

The 26-year-old camper was one of two dozen special-needs campers, ranging from children to adults, with the Therapeutic Recreation program in Collier County. Tuesday was bowling day, but he was reportedly left in the van the entire time.

Workers didn't notice anyone was inside the van until after they went to leave, nearly an hour and a half later.

"You hear a lot of different horror stories and you just hope to God that it's not your child or it doesn't happen in your business and you know," Bronchak said.

At the time, the WINK Weather team says the temperature outside was nearly 90 degrees, meaning the temperature inside the van was as high as 115 degrees.

The camper was given ice water and taken to Physicians Regional Medical Center on Collier Boulevard where he was treated for heat exposure by IV and released.

Now, the worker allegedly responsible for camper could be released by the county and was immediately put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

A county spokesperson says the incident does not appear to be intentional, but the county will conduct a full investigation before making a final decision.

Bronchak says the county Parks and Rec program has brought campers to Woodside Lanes for the past 20 years, and this is the first incident of its kind.

"Yes accidents happen. I mean, that's all I can say to that," she said.

County officials say this is the first time an incident like that has happened with the Therapeutic Recreation program. The program assigns one staff member to every five campers.

Officials would not comment on camera but issued this statement:
(Statement by Collier County Parks & Recreation)
"The incident that occurred yesterday at Woodside Lanes Bowling Alley is unacceptable. We are thankful that this adult program participant is healthy and okay. We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and will take appropriate action upon the conclusion of the investigation."

The county will interview staff members and witnesses through the end of the week.

Even though the family of the camper did not want to talk with WINK News, we have been able to confirm that they have not pressed charges.
