Nick the Webguy: What is a web browser?

By Nick Fokianos, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A web browser is the thing that lets you view websites online. It’s just a software program. It reads the coding language of the World Wide Web and displays it to you in graphic form.

Internet Explorer
You're probably using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your web browser right now. Internet Explorer is the most commonly used web browser. But, they've been criticized over the years for ongoing security issues and numerous bugs. So why do you even have it? Well, the only reason is because it's automatically included as standard with versions of Windows.  Are you sick and tired of Internet Explorer by this point? Did you even know that there are other internet browsers that you can use?

Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is open source software. That means that anyone has the right to download and use the browser for free! Firefox protects you from: viruses, spyware and pop-ups. And it's easy to import your favorites and settings from Internet Explorer. The browser also has several advanced search options including a Google search built right into the toolbar.

Opera
Another excellent free browser is called Opera. Have you ever forgotten the page where you found that great web article at? Well, Opera not only remembers the web addresses you went to… it also remembers the actual content of the web pages you visited. So you'll easily find what you were looking for.

Safari
This web browser was developed by Apple. And it's the default browser in Macintosh computers but, they now have a version of Safari for Windows too!

3B
Here’s a really unique browser.  It’s called 3B.  It takes web pages and turns them into a 3D world!  First, you create a virtual representation of yourself.   Then, you customize your 3D room. And then, you can hang out and chat with your friends… all in virtual reality!   I guess it's sort of like a happy version of the movie “The Lawnmower Man”.  Or whichever futuristic sci-fi fantasy you like.
