NAPLES, Fla. - Naples City Manager Bill Moss tells WINK News the city will have to cut 32 jobs to balance this year's budget. The city faces a $3 million deficit.
"This is happening to all cities in the state, all counties in the state, and probably state government as too. And so we're not unique and again just like other business, when things go down you have to make the adjustments," Moss said.
Those adjustments include cutting cutting 37 jobs, and adding five more, resulting in more than $2.3 million in savings.
"Everybody else is going to have to work better, work harder because our goal again is to provide the same level of services," Moss said.
The Public Works department will see the largest cut, with eight positions eliminated, followed by seven in Community Services, and five in the Police Department.
"In all but one case, the positions are vacant and we might take a position like, two community service workers that usually help with traffic direction or accident reports. Now that'll have to be done by a police officer."
Moss says expect the hours at community centers to get cut as well, meaning they will open later and close earlier.
But even with the cuts, Moss says people can expect the same level of service.
The proposed budget will be discussed with city council members August 18.
Here's the breakdown of the cuts:
37 positions will be cut
Public Works - 8
Community Services - 7
Police - 5
Human Resources - 2
Building Permits - 2
Planning - 2
Finance - 1
City Manager - 1
Technology Services - 1
16 of the positions are currently vacant
21 people will lose their jobs in September
5 positions will be added, meaning a total reduction of 32 jobs total
Even though Moss hopes the city won't have to make any more job cuts, he's not ruling out that possibility.

2,300,000/37 = $62,162 a year average salary? Maybe just the city manager needs to be cut and not the lower paid community service workers.
