Preparing to say good-bye to fallen officer

By WINK News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - The Lee County Sheriff's Office is helping give the men and women of the Fort Myers Police Department the opportunity to properly honor their fallen brother.

The Sheriff's Office has taken over all of the calls of duty for the Fort Myers Police Department. It started at 5pm Tuesday and will continue through 5pm on Wednesday.

"He died in the line of duty. He's a brother officer. His uniform is blue, ours is green, but when something like this happens we all reach out to each other," explained Lt. Robert Forrest with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, "We are all one great family and we respond to each other needs, and basically other law enforcement agencies in the area have stepped in to help the Fort Myers Police Department."

The death of 30-year-old Officer Andrew Widman hit close to home for nearly every law enforcement officer we've spoken to, many unable to hide their grief.

Law enforcement from across the state and country will be represented during Officer Widman's funeral Wednesday which is at 11am at McGregor Baptist Church.

Fort Myers Police say they are expecting more than 2,500 people to attend the funeral for a man who was not only a police officer, but a husband and father to three young children.

He had only served on the department for one year before he was shot and killed at point blank range early Friday morning while responding to a domestic dispute in downtown Fort Myers. Police say he never had the opportunity to pull his own weapon.

The accused gunman was shot and killed a short time later after police say he fired several shots toward other responding officers.

There will be a number of speakers during Officer Widman's funeral services, including Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp and Officer Widman's wife, Susanna Widman.

The ceremony will also include: Bagpipe Troop with Muffled Drum, Horse-Drawn Caisson, Honor Guard, 21-Gun Salute, Taps, Aviation Flyover and a Final Radio Call.

WINK News will carry the funeral live starting at 11am.

The Sheriff's Office is advising anyone planning to travel in the area of Colonial Blvd. to expect heavy traffic congestion between the hours of noon and 2pm on Wednesday.

A funeral procession will leave McGregor Baptist Church and will continue west to Fort Myers Memorial Gardens near Summerlin.

If you have to travel on Colonial Blvd. during that time, or through any of the surrounding streets, you are advised to give yourself at least an extra half hour of travel time.
