LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Officer Widman's death brings back painful memories for the family of the last local law enforcement officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Ronnie Fewell was responding to a domestic dispute in 1983 when he was shot and killed. His twin brother, Donnie, still works for the sheriff's office; and says hearing of Officer Widman's death was a little like living his own nightmare all over again.
"It was like a kick to the gut," Lt. Donnie Fewell said. "It was like a flashback from 25 years ago."
It was news Lt. Donnie Fewell never wanted to hear again: a southwest Florida officer gunned down in the line of duty.
"When its an absolute act of violence like was done to Officer Widman, it just tears at your heart," Fewell said.
Fewell's brother died in a situation very similar to Andrew Widman; taken down by a bullet without ever having the chance to draw his weapon.
Fewell says it's the kind of pain a family never really gets over, but support from family, colleagues and the community can make a huge difference.
"I think the thing that helped my family is our faith. And they're well rounded in their faith. And the thing is to remember the good times. Remember all those good memories," Fewell said. "I know my brother, he loved being a cop, that's what he lived for. I miss him, but I know he died doing something he loved doing."
Fewell says he plans to attend Tuesday's visitation for Officer Widman, but he says funerals are still too difficult for him, having lost not only his brother, but several other friends on the force.
