Friends of fallen Fort Myers police officer speak

By WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Many are mourning the loss of fallen officer, Andrew Widman, both people who knew him and those who didn't. WINK News spoke with a number of his friends, and they shared their memories.

"He had a way of being gentle and friendly and affable. He was just a wonderful person to be around," said Officer Widman's former pastor, Larry Evans.

Those are just some of the words Pastor Evans uses to describe Officer Widman, who spent two years at Grace Church in Toledo, Ohio. He worked with college students.

"He was just one of the finest human beings I ever knew. You couldn't be in his presence without him making you feel like you were the most important person in the circle," said Evans.

The 30-year-old officer was gunned down early Friday morning, when he walked up to a domestic dispute in Downtown Fort Myers.

"I was sick in my stomach. I just wanted to go somewhere and throw up. It was such a blow," said Pastor Evans.

Officer Widman had devoted his life to missionary work before becoming involved in law enforcement, and his comrades say it showed - having even prayed with victims of violent crime.

"It's kind of like you carry a bible in one hand a sword in the other and I think it'd be a good description of him," said Major Doug Baker with the Fort Myers Police Department. "He was a great guy."

More than an officer however, Widman was a husband and father of three small children.

"He gave everything to this department, he gave everything to this city and unfortunately his wife and family are the victims of that," said Officer Jennifer Gaytan.

"It's just such a loss. He was a human being who really had a lot to contribute and was going to contribute it. Now he won't be able to," said Pastor Evans.
