Teen convicted in shooting death of 9-year-old boy
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - A teenager has been found guilty in the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old southwest Florida boy who was caught by a stray bullet in a gang dispute.
A jury convicted 16-year-old Orlando Valenzuela of second-degree murder Wednesday night. Prosecutors say he fired from a car into a crowd of people in Bradenton in May 2007, hitting Stacy Williams III in the neck as the boy rode his bike. The boy's slaying shocked the community and drew new attention to the problem of gang violence in Bradenton. Valenzuela faces at least 25 years in prison when he is sentenced September 12. A 17-year-old girl who owned the car used in the shooting was sentenced in February to four years in prison. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
