PAIN AT THE PUMP: Your story

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The price of gas continues to be a huge expense for many families in Southwest Florida. Especially for those who work out of their car.

Come with us as we take you on a ride with one man, who's "office" is burning a hole in his pocket

Each day Shawn Hilbert finds himself at the gas station. "The dreaded stop," as he calls it.

Hilbert's office is his car. "I'm a service technician. I drive around all day long," he said.

He has no desk. Instead he has a dashboard where pictures of his family are taped up. They are a constant reminder as to why he keeps on trucking. But the price of gas is making it difficult.

"We can't even save a dime these days. It all goes to fuel," Hilbert said.

Riding with Hilbert you can almost feel his pain. Each morning, the man squeezes his 6ft 4in frame into this 2 door sedan. He downgraded from his SUV earlier this year.

"Anything to save a gallon," he said about trading in his car.

Hilbert spends about $800 a month on gas. His employer pays him 17 cents per mile, plus a flat base rate of $182 dollars a month.

Though the money helps, Hilbert still picks up most of the tab himself.

"It's getting pretty brutal. There's some days I'll spend $70 dollars a day, and I'm on empty when I get home," he said.

To make up the difference, Hilbert's family is cutting corners."We went from shopping at Wal-Mart to Save-a-lot and thrift stores."

He's even looked into getting a second job. But he hasn't had any luck. So until then, he saves pennies where ever he can. Hoping the rising cost of gas will go down soon.
