FORT MYERS, Fla. - Filling up your gas tank has become synonymous with
emptying your wallet. As prices go up many drivers are downsizing their ride.
"I actually bought a different car because of the gas prices. I always had a fuller sized car before and I went down to a smaller sized car," says one driver in Fort Myers.
A lot of people are trading in their gas guzzling huge SUV's for smaller gas saving car like the Honda CRX.
Chris Desrosiers and his dad have fixed up and sold more than a dozen of the small sports cars. He says his customers are buying and hoping to hold onto the Honda's for as long as possible. "A lot of older people like them because of the fuel economy part of it. Especially with how thing are today that's what a lot of people are buying them for," he says.
The gas price predicament has another little car seeing big comeback. "Geo metro, Geo prism, the whole Geo line. I've seen some metro's on line for $3 to 4,000," he says.
A search on Craigslist and you'll find both buyers and sellers of the old hatchback.
"40 or 50 miles per gallon is an impressive thing. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore," he says.
Chris says that's what may be the end for the fuel friendly cars because the older they get, the harder it will be to find parts. Until that day, he says buy them, use them and save as much money as you can.
