Soda tab thief confesses

By Mike Essian, WINK News

NORTH NAPLES, Fla. - We showed you surveillance video last week of a woman taking a donation container filled with soda tabs from a bar in North Naples.

The next day, the bar owner, Michael Combs says the woman called and confessed to stealing the tabs for another charity.

But, she had already given away the tabs, so the owner of the bar worked out a deal. The woman would give $100 to the charity and he would drop charges. She agreed.

Meanwhile, others pitched in to help. Since last week, Combs says people have dropped off more than 30 gallons of tabs to replace the stolen ones.

Combs was collecting the tabs for the Ronald McDonald house charities for children. He says the story couldn't have ended better. "I called this morning. They received a cashier's check form the lady for the amount of $100. I think she was feeling pretty dumb about the whole situation and I think she actually felt bad and you know, pretty much ashamed," Combs said.

The container the woman took had an estimated $6 worth of tabs.

A spokesperson for the Collier County Sheriff's Office says the case was closed Monday, and the charges have been dropped, at the request of Combs.

He who says he doesn't think this woman will do it again.
