CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - Sheriff's deputies are gearing up to keep crime down.
Throughout the past month deputies say there's been a spike in the number of car and home burglaries in Englewood. They say most of them could have been prevented.
"One of the things we have found is that there is an increase in burglaries where cars are unlocked and garages are left open at night," says Lt. Keri DeHart of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
Now, deputies are going door to door all this week to remind residents the importance of locking up.
"I think this is great, says resident Michelle Walzer. "I mean I've never seen it before, but it needs to go on because the elderly people are the ones I worry about."
Residents now know the best defense is a good offense.
"We're not trying to intrude on the peace of the evening we're trying to point out to them that this little thing they can do can help protect their property and help protect their families," says Lt. DeHart
