Cell phone only: A growing lifestyle trend

By WINK News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - More Americans are hanging up landlines in favor of living by cell phone only.

In fact, the use of home phones has dropped to about the same numbers as the 1960's.

So are there any good reasons to keep that home line?

"There was absolutely no need for it, so it was just a waste of, what, $100 a month? You get unlimited service on your cell phone and you're fine," said Melody Eichbauer, a cell phone only user.

She and her husband are among the growing number of households living wirelessly, dropping home landline service in favor of cell phones only.

Monica Gliwa, a landline user, said, "Convenience. It's in your pocket, it's in your purse, it's in your car."

A government study says one out of every six homes only has wireless service now, due in part to affordable service plans that include free long distance.

WINK News found many people who say they'd like to drop their home phone, but can't.

"We keep the landline for DSL, for Internet," Gliwa said.

Rose Christman, another landline user, said, "I have a fax machine, and of course a computer. They're all tied into the same line."

Telecom companies also say a landline makes it easier for emergency services to pinpoint your address in an emergency, though technology is improving to track down cell phones.

Landlines are also often used by home alarm companies in case of a break-in.

"I think its important to have both if you can afford it," Christman said.

Another potential drawback to dropping landlines is survey accuracy. This study was actually put together by the National Center for Health Statistics, which relies on phone interviews for studies. So do many of those presidential polls you're seeing.

But with wireless numbers less accessible, researchers worry a good chunk of the population is being left out, and possibly skewing poll results.
