UPDATE: Teen confesses in Miami cop shooting

By The Associated Press

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A teen burglar confessed his part in a backyard shooting that left a Miami-Dade County police officer injured and the suspect's accomplice dead, authorities said Monday.

Officer David Carrero, 27, and at least three other officers arrived at the home to stop a burglary Sunday, when the suspects opened fire on them.

Carrero was shot three times, including bullet wounds to his legs, and is in serious condition at a Miami hospital. A police dog was also shot and is in serious condition, according to an arrest report released Monday by Miami-Dade County police.

Kharl-Henry Lebrun, 17, was charged with second-degree felony murder, attempted murder of a police officer, shooting a police dog and attempted armed burglary, according to an arrest report.

Police fatally shot Giovanni Thermidor, 18, in the melee. Thermidor has been arrested four times since 2005.

Lebrun later told police he and Thermidor had broken into three homes armed with a crowbar and a 9mm handgun, authorities said.

Lebrun was taken to a juvenile assessment center. It was not known if he had an attorney and a listing for his parents could not be found.

A slew of law enforcement officers have been killed or wounded during the past year in South Florida.
