UPDATE: Illegal workers arrested in Lee County

By WINK News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - A raid in Lee County nets illegal workers.

Immigrations officials rounded up 25 un-documented workers on the site of Lee County's jail expansion project on Ortiz Avenue.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office says it received a tip from a confidential informant Wednesday afternoon and immediately informed Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Workers on the site tell WINK News a meeting was called around 9am Thursday. Once everyone was in the room, one of the workers who asked not to be identified told us, "Suddenly immigration people showed up and said, this is immigration and we're going to start searching for papers."

I.C.E. tells us 22 males and 3 females from Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Peru were not able to provide the proper paperwork and were taken into federal custody.

The worker says he knew many of the workers taken into custody, "They put a lot of sweat into this place and suddenly they come in and taken them away." He added, "I feel sorry for them because they were working here so hard."

\We are told most of the workers were employed by sub-contractors working on the jail. The contractor, KRAFT, tells us one of its workers was arrested because one of his documents had expired. However, KRAFT says the worker's documents appear up to date according to company records.

Another subcontractor says it also asked for all of the proper documents before hiring its workers. The question now for investigators is, what went wrong.

I.C.E. and Sheriff Mike Scott say the investigation is not over.

"We certainly want to look further in to how this was allowed to take place, why this took place. The message to other companies is you need to make double sure, triple sure, that people working under your insurance umbrella, under your license are documented and legal," said Sheriff Scott.

Scott did stress to us that at no time, did any of the undocumented workers have access to secure facilities in the jail. He says even workers with green cards are not allowed access.

The 25 workers will remain in I.C.E. custody pending the outcome of their cases. I.C.E. says removal proceedings have begun.

For the children that born here if we could go back in time we would not be US citizens for the simple fact that we all immigrated to this wonderful country. The only AMERICAN CITIZENS that were here was the native indians and North America and South America were all full of Native indians until caucasions came in and bought the north american territory that they so stole from the Mexicans. Please go back and research all your American History before making comments that does not make any sense.

As a Soicial Worker I have seen that the ones living off our tax dollars are not the illegal immagrants, but american citizens that do not like to work. The american citizens can totally count for money for food, rent, and daycare so they can sit t home and worry about anything else. Illegal immigrants don't qualify for any of these services for the simple fact that they do not have any documentation.

I used to live in Texas, Brownsville. The Hospital system there is going Broke because of the Illegal Women comeing accross the Border 8 1/2 Mo. Pregnant in order to have their child born in the USA and get an American Birth Cert, The Laws should be changed. So that an illegal Woman will recieve a birth certificate, for her child from the Country of Origin, NOT THE USA. Doing this will Discourage them from comeing here just to get an American Birth Certificate for their child.

I think Imigration Offices should be built at all Border Crossings. Give them all green cards but make shure they have proof of Identity Fingerprints Photo and proof of # of Dependents, so they pay proper amount of Taxes. I have been all over US. I have seen the Illegal and legal imigrants working at all kinds of Jobs. Typical example is 19 yr.old claiming to have 8 children, so as to have least amount of $ taken out for income taxes. Let them work here but make shure they Pay their Taxes.

The real issue is that contractors use subcontractors who use illegal workers so they can underbid legitimate contractors. The law says that when they hire an employee, as long as the documents "appear" legitimate, that's all the due diligence they need to do.

I bet you they would fight harder than most Americans right now to be a citizen. They don't have the same life and freedoms as you and I. Don't complain that they are taking your jobs...if you are not willing to do what they do. By all means, if you think you can work as hard, and put as much heart into your work...I'm sure they are hiring now...have at it...

Illegal aliens do not want to be in this country illegally. Those that I have interviewed have stated that they are willing to pay 2 - 3 times the taxes that Americans pay just for the privilege of having legal documents and a valid US drivers license.Until our federal government enacts a guest worker program for laborers in this country, illegal immigration will not end.

If their country is so bad, then they should stay there and fight to make it better as MY (our) forefathers have done. They (forefathers) weren't handed everything, given schooling, medical care etc. Our freedom is still being paid for by our brave men. Ship them back, cut the legal taxpayers a break.

It's wrong about them working with no papers. But I can understand why many come to the U.S.A to work to have a better life.If we had to live out of the U.S.A. maybe we could understand how there life is in other countys.WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE DON'T LIVE IN A 3RD WORLD.We take so many things for granted but when we lose everything that's makes our life easier maybe we could understand more why people do what they do for a better life.We are not in there shoes to really understand how that life is.

i saw the company logo of specrum painting on the workers shirts.isn't kraft const. the g/c for the project?if kraft is the g/c then i believe spectrum is a subsidiary of kraft--doesn't that seem that odd-- i mean isn't there the possibility kraft didn't do due diligence due to the fact the sub contractor was in fact them selves????
