Grace under fire

Customers give thousands to help Cape Coral waitress

By Cristin Severance

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - One month ago Grace Hamm lost her Cape Coral home in a fire. She was called a hero, for helping to save her family from the burning home. Now the quick thinking grand-ma has some hero's of her own.

Grace Hamm saved her grandson Shawn from his burning room April 14, 2008.

"Today he turns two. He's having a real hard struggle with the whole fire thing. He's called the Cracker Barrel baby, when he comes in here, everybody knows Shawn," says Hamm.

You can't go far before hearing gracious things about about Grace from her Cracker Barrel co-workers and customers.

"One of the most wonderful servers we have here," says her manager William Kirk.

"Everybody is drawn to her. People will wait 30 minutes to sit in her section," says her co-worker and friend Erica Champlain.

"She makes everybody smile that comes in that restaurant," says her customer Clyde Tigchelarr.

Now customers like Tigchelarr are making her smile, digging deep into their pockets and giving Grace money to rebuild after the fire.

"80 bucks, not a lot. I'm sure a lot of people gave too, you get a lot of people and that adds up I guess," says Tigchelarr.

Tigchelarr was right, it did add up to thousands of dollars from customers and local companies.

"Whether it was a dollar or $500 dollars, the generosity and the large amounts still baffles me," says Hamm.

"The way she cares about people, it is being paid back to her," says Kirk.

Hamm says one of her biggest problems is writing thank-you notes to all of the people who helped her. She says while she lost everything, she's gained a whole new perspective on life. "If there is any hope to be given to Fort Myers, there is humanity in this world and I'm proof of it," she says.

I've known Grace for over 35 years and she is still the same warm wonderful friend, it seems. She was my very best friend in elementary and high school, we were inseparable. She hasn't changed a bit, still loving and just a very good person through and through. I'm so pleased to know how her community has seen her through these difficult times. I love ya, Grace and miss you even more. If I could be of help, please call me. Even if we do live thousands of miles apart I am only a phone call away

We are daily customers of Cracker Barrel for over 7 years. My husband Pete worked with her years ago in advertising. We wrote out a check for her before we left the Barrel & then extra money to cover her renters insurance. Grace, takes a lot of kidding from her fellow workers at the Barrel as well as her large following of customers. She is one beautiful lady and we do love her!!
