Stay Alive, Just Drive

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

LEE COUNTY, Fla - A nationwide study names Tampa as one of the most dangerous cities to drive in for teens. One of those dangers is distracted drivers.

Here at home, the Lee County Sheriff's Office is trying to put the brakes on those distractions. Statistics show both distracted and teen drivers are the number one threat to people on the road. With summer around the corner, authorities fear it'll get worse.

"They're very dangerous. Driving a car is essentially a four thousand pound missile," said Lt. Jim Drazymala, from the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

To see how dangerous it is, I stood along Daniels Parkway with Jay Anderson, from Stay Alive, Just Drive to see how many distracted drivers we found.

Immediately, we saw several people talking on cell phones. "It's amazing," Anderson said.

When it comes to drivers, the most easily distracted are teens.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says teens account for 36% of motor vehicle crash deaths.

To see how distracted they can get, we put a camera on a nineteen year old driver, never telling him what kind of story we're doing. A few times he looked at his cell phone and took his eyes off the road, but overall he passed the test. Authorities hope in the coming months more people will learn about to keep their eyes on the road.

"We stand by our statement, awareness is key to understanding how one second can change a life forever," said Jay Anderson, from Stay Alive, Just Drive.

People should get tickets for driving while talking on a cell phone, period. It should be that cut and dry. I witness accidents and near accidents every day and the person responsible always seems to be a young woman in an suv talking on a cell phone with a coffee in the other hand. I never thought I'd say this, but old people, you have some real competition!
