FORT MYERS, Fla. - Families face tough decisions in today's economy. For some, it is a decision no family wants to make. Getting rid of the family pet because they can't afford it.
The Gulf Coast Humane Society is used to people giving up their animals, but lately, it's been happening often.
"We're seeing about double what we normally see," said executive director, Don Cohen. "It's been this way for about 3-4 months, but gradually getting worse."
Employees say about 99% of the time now, it all comes down to money.
"A lot of the people are telling us that they're being evicted. That they can no longer afford their place. They haven't paid rent in three months and they can't afford their animals," said shelter manager, Victoria Grunlund.
The shelter is taking in about five or more new animals a day. Most of them are dogs.
"They're incredible animals that really deserve to have the good steady homes and these people are crying as they're handing their animals over. It's really heartbreaking," added Grunlund.
And with almost 180 dogs in their care, the Humane Society is being creative by doubling up in some cases. Workers say they'll keep taking in animals, but pet owners need to be sure about their decision.
"We ask everybody to think long and hard before you surrender your animal, or before you adopt," said Cohen.
The Humane Society asks that when you give up an animal, please don't drop it over the fence or chain it to the fence. They need to talk to the owner to find out about the pet's history, to try to find a good home for it.
