UPDATE: Lock-down lifted at FAU after campus shooting suspect found
UPDATE
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Florida Atlantic University is no longer on lock-down now that authorities have their suspect in an early morning campus shooting. FAU Police Chief Charles Lowe says two shots were fired at a party in the student apartments on the Boca Raton campus. One non-student was slightly injured. But it's not clear if that person was hit by a bullet. Exams were canceled and students were told to stay in their dormitories as authorities searched the campus this morning. Officials say hours after the shooting, the suspect was found at an off-campus location. The campus will remain closed today but will reopen for classes tomorrow. Authorities have not said whether the unidentified male suspect is a student. This is finals week at FAU. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) ORIGINAL STORY UPDATE: FAU shooting investigation By WINK News BOCA RATON, Fla. - A Florida college campus is still on lock-down right now. Even final exams have been put on hold after an early morning shooting. One person was hurt and investigators are looking for the shooter. Police are saying that an on-campus party at FAU turned ugly about 1:00 a.m. A fight broke out and ultimately ended with gunfire. 26 minutes later at 1:42 p.m. University police notified all students of the shooting. Sirens, mass emails and announcements over the school public address system warned students of an armed gunman on campus. The warning message also went out on the school's website homepage. Students were told to get indoors immediately and stay there until further notice. The University's alert system was installed just 60 days ago and hadn't been fully tested. The Boca Raton campus will remain on lock-down until the suspect is caught or police determine he is no longer on campus. Campus police have targeted a person of interest. The person hurt in the shooting was not a student. |
