NEW YORK (AP) - The Miami Dolphins have gone through the motions of taking Michigan offensive lineman Jake Long with the first pick in the NFL draft. The Dolphins took the suspense out of the pick four days ago by signing him to a five-year contract worth 30 million dollars in guaranteed money.
Long was Michigan's starting left tackle the last two seasons, earning Big Ten Lineman of the Year honors both years. He started the final 10 games at right tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2004 and appeared on his way to a great college career. But a serious leg injury caused him to miss the first seven games of the '05 season. He started the final four games that season before anchoring the Wolverines' line the rest of the way.
Long has excellent size at 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds. He plays with a serious mean streak and seems to look forward to hitting people. There's no real dropoff in his level of play whether it's in pass or run protection. He's also an outstanding team player who shows extreme smarts and awareness for the game.
