Kids removed from home with human feces all over the wall

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

EAST NAPLES, Fla. - A East Naples mother is in jail after her kids are found in what's described as horrid living conditions. She was arrested for child neglect.

In the arrest report, the deputy on the scene says he found the home in extreme disarray, which included human feces smeared all over the wall.

"I was just surprised. Really surprised," said Marilisa Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is stunned after seeing her friend and neighbor arrested for child neglect. "They didn't look like they were abused or mistreated," she said about her neighbor's kids. We're not identifying the mother arrested because it could identify the children. Children, the authorities say were being neglected.

When sheriff deputies arrived, they say the little boy had insect bites on his head, but neighbors tell us they live so close to the Naples Botanical Garden that insect bites around here is normal and doesn't scream child neglect.

"My daughter gets bit. It's bad here, because we have the garden," Rodriguez said.

It's actually what deputies say they found inside the home that's neglect. The deputy said the house had no working water or electricity, dead roaches, beer cans all over the kitchen, drug paraphernalia lying around, and because there was hardly any food, the deputy says he saw the two children eating out of ketchup packets.

"We really didn't know it was as bad of a situation going on over there," Rodriguez said.

From the street the house looks normal, right down to the kids toys on the lawn.

But when I went to the front door to get some answers, I saw beer cans on the steps, kids clothes left on the ground and empty mayonnaise packets they may have been eating.

An open window next to the door shows a soiled mattress.

No one was home at the time to give me answers because the mother is still in jail and her kids have been taken away.

Neighbors, however, say appearances can be deceiving. "She's not a bad person. She's was not a bad mom. she might have made some mistakes," Rodriguez said.

The mother is facing both child neglect and drug charges. Her two children are in the care of the Department of Children and Families.

I'm a single mom with 4 kids and yes it is tough at times. My kids may not have everything they WANT but they do have what they NEED. As anakop4174 said, there are resources out there she could have used to get food for her children but the drugs and the beer were obviously more important. If she's not such a bad mom, as her neighbor states, then hopefully this incident is enough of a wake up call for her to realize how bad her situation was and takes action to correct it.

With the economy in the condition it's in, jobs scarce, employers cutting jobs, I hate to think what is going to happen to folks who are going thru these hard times. The reports should also include info of how to access help!

Not a bad mom, made some mistakes?!!!! Give me a break! A mistake is dropping an egg, or dialing a wrong number. Having no food or electric, not providing for the children that never ask to be here is not a mistake. NEGLECT NEGLECT NEGLECT!!! Prey for the children that the mom should never been allowed to have in first place. I think all the testing, classes and coursed that foster parents are put through should be inforced on all young parents in todays society.

Amazing that she could afford to buy beer and cigarettes that authorities found evidence of but not food or the basic necessaties those children need. A very sad statement about so called "parents".

I have to agree with srs326. The children deserve much better. If the mother could not afford food and electricity then she needed to get help from the community. The resources are out there and by her not using them does not help her case any. My heart goes out to those kids.
