An outbreak of Nile Monitor Lizards across Florida?

By Cristin Severance

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Think about it. An outbreak of Nile monitor lizards across Florida. What sounds like it should be the plot for a science fiction thriller is actually possible according to one expert.

They could be lounging in your pool, scaling your drainpipe, or crawling around your canal.

"They dig, they swim, they climb. The only thing they don't do is fly, yet!," said Environmental Biologist Kraig Hankins.

The Nile Monitor Lizard can be found all over Florida but some consider Cape Coral their hometown.

"Some people are afraid, my pets gong to be eaten or my child's going to be attacked," said Hankins.

Hankins and a few others are charged with catching the carnivores all around the city. "Almost 1,000 sightings have been logged," said Hankins.

The best advice if you are forced to live in harmony with the lizards is to avoid them and they'll do the same.

If you spot a Nile Monitor Lizard in your neighborhood and want a trap call the city at 239-574-0785.
