TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Parents and police join forces in Tallahassee, pushing for tougher laws and technology to stop drunk drivers.
Parents of two children killed by drunk drivers were joined by officers and members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Monday at the Capitol. They're calling on lawmakers to expand the use of ignition locks for convicted drunk drivers.
"In a fraction of a second, our evening went to bliss to horror," said Anna Redgate, describing the crash that killed her nine-month-old daughter, Grace. While pushing her baby across a bridge, a repeat drunk driver smashed into the stroller.
"If only that driver had had the interlock device on his vehicle, it wouldn't have happened," Redgate said.
Under a bill named for Grace Redgate, any first-time offender, or someone who had a minor in the car during a DUI, would have to use an ignition lock for at least one year. Florida already requires the locks for a six month period for some DUI offenders. This proposal would make the rules even tougher, disabling a person's car if his or her blood alcohol level is above 0.025 percent.
"The car was driving over 70 miles per hour, the driver, through the residential area and killed my son," said Glynn Birch, who lost his son to a drunk driver with a revoked license, speeding through their Orlando neighborhood. Birch says he's encouraged by the technology, and hopes it can save lives.
"If that driver had interlock after his first conviction, I know that Courtney would be here today because that second and third conviction would not have happened," Birch said.
The bill passed the Florida House last year, but didn't get through the Senate. It hasn't made it to the floor of either chamber yet this year.

WE had an 8 y/o girl in our neighborhood playing in the yard near the road and a drunk driver hit and ran and got off with a slap on the hand and he is still driving the neighborhood and I am afraid to let my grandchildren play in the front yard just because of this mans carlessness and getting a simple house arrest. He killed her instantly and left and hide is vehicle in his garage. WHat is this world coming to when the bad guys get breaks and the good people are punished
