Local Man Witnesses Fireworks Mishap

By Nicole Papageorge

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla - A Charlotte County man is caught in Sunday's disturbing incident at a World Wrestling Entertainment event in Orlando.

The show offers fans pyrotechnics, rock 'em sock 'em action and brutal rivalries. But, Wrestlemania XXIV also gave fans something else.

"At the end of the show they had these cables that ran like over our heads and they were shooting fireworks along like rockets and the cable snapped," says witness Neil Hughes.

Hughes is the government reporter for the Charlotte Sun Herald. He was at Wrestlemania when a cable and numerous fireworks went crashing into the crowd.

"It shocked us, the kid in front of us was hit by a firework and the paramedics came in," says Hughes. "So you know that was pretty scary."

About thirty-five people, including Hughes, suffered minor injuries.

"Right after the cable landed on my head and hit me in the head and on my shoulder," says Hughes.

Now, he wants to know what happened.

"They have those same streamers [at] every show, so I guess it was just the fact that it was a new arena and they never hooked anything up [before]," says Hughes.

Hughes along with numerous other fans have put in complaints with the W.W.E., but despite the accident he'll always be a fan.

"16oz beers and sitting there yelling' your head off having a good time .. That's what it was all about," says Hughes.

In a statement released on Monday, the W.W.E. apologized for the incident. The company says they're investigating to make sure an incident like this never happens again. So far, there has been no word of any lawsuits or penalties against the W.W.E.
