SOUTHWEST, Fla -- Parent Vivian Theriault says her daughter suffered for months with a bad cold and cough.
After visits to the doctor and still no cure, an allergist tested her for mold and it came back positive.
Theriault and other parents believe the mold is coming from their children's classroom at Gulf Elementary School in Cape Coral.
Wink News obtained test results completed last fall from American Management Resources Corporation, a company hired by the Lee County School District.
AMR found suspect microbial growth, or mold, was observed underneath furniture in a few classrooms.
The district requested further testing and those results were similar to the last report, mold was discovered, however, it was not significant and mold inside any building is to be expected.
"The results inside the classroom is either at or better than the levels outside the classroom and you cannot ask for anything more than that," said district spokesman Joe Donzelli.
But the report details high levels of aspergillis mold present in two classrooms.
Experts say exposure to this mold does not normally cause illness, but those with asthma could suffer symptoms.
Another classroom contained miscellaneous spores.
Teachers also did their own swab testing using a at home kit and sent it off to an accredited lab.
Their results were drastically different.
Pro-lab analysts came back with several other types of mold present in all three classrooms tested.
The district refused to comment on the other test results.
"I didn't see it and I'm not going to comment on something that I can't confirm or deny and ... Have not looked at," said Donzelli.
WINK News also found that back in 2002, AMR tested the air at Gulf Elementary and concluded corrective measures needed to be taken.
The district says they took those measures.
:I don't think there is anybody (who can) sit here and tell you there isn't cleaning going on in that school," said Donzelli.
However, six years later mold is still in the school and parents believe its making their children sick.
