Southwest Florida gets its first Vietnam Veterans Memorial

By WINK Web Manager

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Those who made the ultimate sacrifice are honored. Sunday afternoon hundreds of people turned out for the unveiling of a veterans memorial in Fort Myers.

The project is a tribute to local service members who gave their lives for our country, and will provide a peaceful place for families to remember their loved ones.

It's ten years in the making, and the people involved couldn't be more proud. Sunday's scene at the corner of McGregor Boulevard and Colonial Parkway looked like Vietnam. A re-enactment was performed by the Suncoast Vietnam Veterans of Pinellas County.

Owen Lucky say it is a scene he remembers well. He served two tours in vietnam, and lost his brother, James Lucky. "I told him he'd be safe when he went over there, obviously i made a mistake," said Owen Lucky.

A group of speakers shared their war stories of survival and hope that future generations realize the price they and their comrades paid.

"I hope and pray that our government will learn from this experience," says Arne Suonminen. He says he tried to go back to fight the latest war, the war on terror. But Suonminem was denied, "We're too old to go back in, we tried but they didn't need us."

Now he salutes those that he says are fighting for him and his country, and hopes their names aren't one day engraved on this wall. Suonminem says, "We welcome them back, give them a big hug and squeeze, adn thank them for doing what they're doing."

More than 30 companies and one hundred individuals donated either their time or money to this project.
