DAYCARE SHOOTING: Daycare workers were concerned about accused shooter

By WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - WINK News has learned the victim of the daycare shooting, Christine Dunn, was worried about her safety. The story was first broken on WINKNews.com.

That information comes from a police report released Saturday. The report also walks through what police say the shooter, Robert Harold Dunn, did leading up to and on that day.

A locksmith was at the quiet Bobbie Noonan Daycare center on Saturday, but people around Cape Coral were talking about the tragedy.

"I guess when there's a will there's a way," said Bill Hoffman. A new police report detailing a confession from Robert Dunn. In the report, Dunn tells police how he wanted his wife dead. He says he wanted her to feel the pain that he was going through due to the possibly of losing custody of his daughter in a divorce.

When Dunn first got to the daycare center on Friday, the police reports say he tried to get in the front door. But he couldn't do it. So, Dunn made his way in through the back.

The report says Dunn threatened other workers before shooting his wife Christy twice in the chest.

Emergency Medical Services worker pronounced Christine Dunn dead shortly after; no children were hurt. Police say at least three were spattered with Christy's blood.

Police say Dunn wanted to kill himself, but didn't get a chance. A parent was able to grab Dunn's gun and run out the building with the gun.

Then police took Robert Dunn into custody.

The first 9-1-1 call actually didn't come from the daycare. A neighbor saw a man walking around the back of the daycare, loading a gun, heard gun shots. Then the neighbor then called police.

The police report is stunning, showing a desperate woman's long-time fear that something like this could happen. In the police report we find-out Christine Dunn was terrified for her safety.

The report details the director of the Daycare telling police, for a time the facility was "locked-down" on a daily basis to keep Dunn away from the employees and children at the day care.

In September, the report says Christine tried to get a court order to protect her from Robert, but a judge denied the request.

Police searched Christine's purse for evidence after the shooting. They discovered papers logging all of the Robert's stalking.

The police report also contains evidence Dunn got himself drunk before the shooting. So drunk he backed-out during part of the shooting. Dunn told officers he went to a bar not far from the daycare, he drank beer, mixed drinks, and had some shots.

According to the report, Dunn left the bar got on his bicycle and went to the daycare.

WINK News tried to get a hold of a copy of Christine Dunn's request for a protection order to see why it was rejected by the judge. But, those court documents are sealed.
