Southwest Florida - More than a hundred kids in Southwest Florida are waiting to be adopted.
"We have children of all ethnicities. We've got single children. It runs the gamut of all types of children," says Aimee McLaughlin of the Children's Network of Southwest Florida.
To help these kids find a home, a local agency is trying something new: art
"These kids inner beauty shines. They're just normal kids. They're real kids," McLaughlin says.
They're all kids from Southwest Florida. They're posing as part of an art exhibit and each of them wants to be adopted.
"It's different. It's a traveling art exhibit of the children available for adoption in Southwest Florida," McLaughlin says
It's called the Heart Gallery.
"It's a new way of promoting adoption. It's a new way to get their faces out there and making them real to the community," McLaughlin said.
Kids like Jasper Walker, who we first met in November.
"My mom abused me and my sister," Walker said in an interview in November.
He told us then he is looking for a perfect family.
"My fear is to not get hurt again," he said.
Today the 12-year old is still looking. He is part of the exhibit.
The art exhibit will start here in Naples and then moves to other parts of Southwest Florida. So far, the gallery has helped a thousand kids across the country get adopted. It's hoped some of that magic will develop here.
"It's up to us to find homes for these kids. if we have to get creative and put together a 6 foot display and move around from Naples to fort myers to do it, we will," McLaughlin said.
The exhibit will be unveiled on Saturday, February 2nd at the Naples Botanical Garden. The program begins at 5pm. For more information about the program or to donate a room to showcase the exhibit, call the Children's Network at 239-226-1524 or log onto their website www.childnetswfl.org
