Coming to the defense of accused band director

By WINK News

A person is coming to the defense of the Port Charlotte High School Band Director accused of sex crimes against his students.

Charlotte County School District reports paint a grim picture of what Dale Bowe is accused of doing. The band director was arrested after claims were made that he performed oral sex on one of his students while that student was sleeping.

But, one of Bowe's neighbor's says you have not heard the full story. "It's the accusations that are killing him," says Scott Taylor.

Taylor tells WINK News his friend of fourteen years, Dale Bowe, is too emotionally distraught to speak for himself. Taylor says he knows Bowe well, and Bowe would never do what the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office accuses him of doing.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office report details the account of a teenage boy who says he received oral sex against his will while swimming in the shallow end of Bowe's pool. "The man is very innocent, these kids are destroying his life, they have no idea what they're doing," Taylor says of Bowe and the accusations.

A representative for the Charlotte County School District says his colleagues are also shocked at the accusations. Public Information Officer Mike Riley says the actions are completely out of character for Bowe. "He's been in the community for 18 years and we're really disappointed," says Riley.

The school district offered Bowe a suspension with pay, but Bowe decided to resign immediately. "A person is not guilty, until proven guilty, and that's the purpose of 'suspended without pay,' he chose to resign," said Riley.

But Taylor says there is a different reason for the resignation. "He just didn't want to put the school through it, and he didn't want to go through it," explained Taylor.

The district is offering counseling for those students who may have been involved in any incident with Bowe.

Bowe's arraignment is on March 3rd.

The first allegation of abuse against Bowe didn't happen in Charlotte County, it led deputies to the alleged swimming pool victim.

Police reports mention special trips to Orlando that Bowe would take with students.

A school resource officer learned Bowe may have abused a student during one of those trips. Charlotte County Major Crimes Detectives began investigating.

They were able to find the names of several students who claimed they spent time at Bowe's home, and went on trips to Orlando.

The arrest report shows deputies spoke to a 16-year-old boy who says Bowe performed oral sex on him while on a trip to Disney World.

The Sheriff's report continues to read after hearing rumors of other victims, the 15 year old who claims he was abused while in Bowe's swimming pool came forward. Charlotte County Deputies arrested Bowe once the student made his claim.

Bowe has not been arrested for his alleged involvement with incidents outside of Charlotte County. The Orlando Police Department has been notified of the allegations.
