Florida TaxWatch: Property tax amendment is a bad idea, maybe unconstitutional

By WINK News

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - On Friday, the tax advocacy group Florida TaxWatch, released a report saying the proposed property tax constitutional amendment is a bad idea.

They say the proposed amendment, does not target relief to those who need it most, perpetuates an inequitable system and exacerbates the tax shift to those taxpayers who have suffered the most.

The group adds part of the amendment could be against the Federal Constitution, and they expect it to be challenged in court if the amendment passes.

TaxWatch questions if "Save Our Homes Portability" would be constitutional. The question is because a home owner from within Florida buying a new house would have a different property tax bill than a home owner moving from outside of the state, even if both home owners purchased the same new home at the same price at the same time.

Floridians will vote on the amendment January 29.

Florida TaxWatch representatives also say, the passage of the amendment could mean the end of true property tax reform.
