Port Charlotte, FLA - Mary Parker never falls for sales pitches over the phone even though she gets dozens of telemarketing calls everyday.
"I'm like anyone else, the telephone rings several times a day with people trying to sell me this and that and I say no, no, no."
But last May, Parker said a company called General Warranty Services gave her a great sales pitch.
"They offered me 100% coverage on parts, labor and diagnostic services and that sounded pretty good," said Parker, who looked up the company online after she'd already purchased a $1,799 warranty.
Parker found dozens of complaints on consumer based websites and decided to cancel the agreement within five days. She has still not recieved a refund from the company.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said General Warranty Services is not a registered telemarketer with the state. That means they are not supposed to be completing sales transactions over the phone.
The Better Business Bureau lists 109 complaints against the New Hampshire based company and mentions government action taken against them by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
In a March 3,2008 cease and desist letter a consumer investigator from Wisconsin reprimanded the company for not registering as a telemarketer and then calling Wisconsin residents who are on the do not call registry.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has collected 36 complaints against General Warranty Services, and New Hampshires Department of Insurance said they are actively investigating the company.
Public records law does not allow the Attorney General's office to release details of the complaints, but in Florida those complaints are public.
Attorney General Bill McCullom's office sent WINK News seven complaints that have been turned in against General Warranty Services. Some complain that they purchased warranties that did not pay for what was promised, while others complain about being harrassed by the telemarketing calls from the company.
