Q: What is your living arrangement (spouse and kids)?
A: Live with my wife Janet and dog Willi. I have a son who works for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Newark, NJ.
Q: How long have you lived in the area that you wish to represent?
A: I have lived in District 3 since 2000.
Q: For candidates running for election: Why are you running for this office. For candidates running for re-election: Why do you deserve re-election?
A: Since my involvement with the city government I have become concerned that the pyramid has become inverted. There has been a steady migration of power to the city staff and a concomitant dilution of accountability. Past city councils have acquiesced in this process. The result has been a vast increase in the growth of government and spending - that has outpaced the combined rate of growth and inflation as well as the ability of the residents to afford it. This has manifested itself into a feeling of alienation from and mistrust in government. The fact that five seats are up for election presents the people of Cape Coral a rare opportunity to elect enough of those who feel as I do that change is needed and a proper balance needs to be restored.
Q: What is the single most important issue in this election?
A: To make Cape Coral an affordable place to live while restoring trust in the government and pride in the community and assuring well managed smart growth.
Q: What sets you apart from other candidates?
A:
My formal civilian educational background: BA in Political Science, MBA in Management,
cum laude law degree (JD), and post graduate studies in Education, Political Science and Fine Arts provide me with a unique body of knowledge.
I have a proven record of achievement in the business world.
I was a manager and attorney for AT&T operating in a competitive environment and a corporate culture that rewarded success, particularly in a downsizing environment due to government mandated divesture and free market forces.
This gives me insight that others may not possess.
Additionally, I had a parallel career in the Armed Forces.
I started out as a Cadet in 1961 and ended as a Colonel in 1999.
I graduated the Army Command and
General
Staff
College , the
Army
Logistics
College , and the
National
Defense
University .
I had two combat tours, one in as a technical intelligence officer and the other commanding a battalion during Desert Storm. I have had high level jobs at the Pentagon and as a full Colonel worked with the Hungarian Ministry of Defense helping them achieve NATO status.
I have served my community as a member of the Cape Coral Budget Review Committee and the Dispute Resolution Committee. I worked with the Small Business Administration after Hurricane Charley helping local residents obtain loans to rebuild their homes. I serve the Lee County School Board as a member of the Pride and Patriotism Committee. I am a member of Civic Association, the Cape Coral Republican Club, the Lee County Republican Executive Committee, the Cape Coral Art League and the Southwest Neighborhood Association. I am the Florida SW Area Vice President of the Military Officers Association of American (MOAA) and past president of the local (Cape Coral-Ft. Myers) MOAA chapter.
I believe I possess the required skill set (achieved through both education and experience) and an understanding of leadership that separate those who perform from those who don’t. I am receptive to new ideas and do not shut people down. I have a realistic approach to what can be accomplished and what cannot. I continue to grow and not repeat mistakes. I am not arrogant and do not suffer from a large ego and the “not invented here” syndrome. I am well-versed in negotiating techniques needed to get people to commit to common goals and align efforts.
