Florida congressman defends giving borrowed speech

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Republican congressman from Florida says he did nothing wrong by delivering a commencement address several years ago that heavily borrowed from a speech written by a GOP senator from Georgia.

Rep. Jeff Miller's speech, while not copying Sen. Johnny Isakson's word for word, contains nearly identical passages and cites the same life lessons.

Miller says he gave Isakson proper credit when he delivered the speech at a University of West Florida graduation ceremony in 2004. He says the attribution was mistakenly left out of a written transcript that has been posted on his Web site since then. He has now amended the site to reflect Isakson's contributions.

A columnist for The Augusta Chronicle discovered the similarities after hearing Isakson speak at Georgia Southern University's commencement last month.
