Obama wants Congress involved in passport snooping case

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Barack Obama says Congress should investigate the State Department's snooping into presidential candidates' passport files.

Obama learned Thursday night that State Department employees looked through his file. The department said Friday the files of Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain were also violated.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with all three candidates Friday and expressed regrets. The agency's inspector general is investigating. The Justice Department is monitoring in case a criminal investigation is warranted.

Obama says Congress needs to be involved so it's not just an internal investigation. He says the privacy violations are a problem not just for him but for how government functions.
